“I want to talk with my kids about the Bible more, but I feel like I don’t know enough about it. Or even if I do, it’s like I don’t know how I say it for a kid. Help?”

Each story guide includes:

✦ Story Paraphrase

A short, kid-accessible paraphrase of the Bible story for the week. Plus, every story will also be offered as an episode of the Ask Away Podcast for kids!

✦ Commentary + Context Page

A 2-page commentary and context cheat sheet to help you with what’s going on behind the text and offer insights into things kids often ask about.

✦ Wonder, Play & Pray Ideas

A trio of open-ended ‘wonder questions’, a game, and a prayer practice that go with the story or attribute of God.

✦ Support in the Comments

Have a question that wasn’t covered in the resources? Just ask in the comments section! We know we can’t be comprehensive, so the comments are there for the other stuff on your mind.

"I love your perspective and tips on helping parents guide their children in faith, even when faith feels a little wobbly. Thank you! "

FAQs

  • YES! Bible Story Guides are hosted on Substack, and all past stories are there for you.

  • You can download a full list of stories here.

  • The guides work well as group curriculum or a baseline for church to write their own. The commentary page is a great resource for volunteers as well.

Churches who want to use the guides for their group can click here to sign up for a church subscription, which gives you permission to use the materials for curriculum and training.

Church subscriptions also receive exclusive workshops and can sign up for a monthly church chat —a 30-minute consult call when we can talk shop on anything in your ministry.

  • That’s awesome! Please invite your families to subscribe to the guides themselves, and don’t forward the materials from your church subscription. If your church would like to pay for your families to receive Bible Story Guides, please get in touch to set up a discounted group rate.

  • The material is very ‘choose your own adventure’. Or, it’s like a menu; pick what you’d like. On the menu are a story paraphrase, a podcast episode, wonder questions, a game, and a way to pray together.

    Some options:

    • STORY + ACTIVITY: You could read/tell/listen to the podcast of the stories and follow that with one or more of the activity ideas.

    • SPLIT IT UP: You could just do the story one day, and one or more activities on different days.

    • ADD ON: You could add your own activities if your kids like, for instance, crafts (because those aren’t included. I’m, uh, not exactly the crafty type)

    • JUST THE STORY: You could just listen to the podcast or tell the story and read the commentary page for yourself to feel more equipped for follow up conversations (which may or may not happen on any given story. We know sometimes kids have a lot to say and sometimes they got nothin’.)

    • PERSONAL GROWTH: You might just read along here for a while yourself for your own learning, and then start something in your family down the road.

    Also, don’t miss this tip:

USE THE COMMENTS: Use the comments for anything you’d like to talk more about from the essay or story! We can’t be comprehensive, so if ever along the way you or your kid’s question isn’t on the commentary page, leave it in the comments section of that story and we’ll try to help.
